What Bright Futures actually is

Bright Futures is Florida's state merit scholarship program, paid for by the Florida Lottery. It isn't need-based like the FAFSA; it's earned entirely through your student's own GPA, test scores, coursework, and service or work hours in high school. It pays directly toward tuition and fees at an eligible Florida college or university, not a lump cash payment to the student. There are actually four award levels, not just the two most families hear about:

Florida Academic Scholars (FAS)	The highest tier. Covers 100% of tuition and applicable fees at a Florida public college or university.
Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS)	The next tier down. Covers 75% of tuition and applicable fees at a Florida public college or university.
Gold Seal CAPE Scholars (GSC)	Earned through industry certifications rather than GPA or test scores. Pays a fixed dollar amount per credit hour.
Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSV)	For students completing a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway. Pays a fixed dollar amount per credit hour.

Initial eligibility requirements

To be considered at all, a student must: submit the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) by the deadline, graduate from a Florida high school with a standard diploma, complete the required coursework, and meet the GPA, test score, and hours targets below.

CLT is the Classic Learning Test, an SAT/ACT alternative Florida also accepts. Test scores must be earned by August 31 of graduation year (January 31 for mid-year graduates). Requirements are set by the legislature each session and can change; this chart reflects the official FDOE numbers current as of August 2026.

Read that hours row carefully. If your student's hours are only volunteer service, FMS only needs 75. The moment any paid work hours are involved, whether alone or mixed with volunteer hours, the total minimum jumps to 100 for both FAS and FMS.

This is the same 16-credit list for both FAS and FMS.

What it actually pays

How the award is calculated depends on whether the school is public or private.

Public Florida college or university	The award simply covers 100% (FAS) or 75% (FMS) of whatever that specific school charges for tuition and fees. It scales automatically with the school's own published rates.
Private Florida college or university	The state sets a fixed dollar amount per credit hour each year instead, since private tuition isn't state-controlled. See the 2026-27 rates below.

At roughly a 30-credit-hour year, that's about $6,360/year for FAS or $4,770/year for FMS at a 4-year private school. Quarter-based private schools use slightly different, lower per-credit rates; ask that school's financial aid office for the exact figure.

Where you can use it

All 12 Florida public universities	UF, FSU, UCF, USF, FIU, FAU, UNF, UWF, FGCU, FAMU, Florida Polytechnic University, and New College of Florida.
All 28 Florida College System schools	Every state college in Florida, including Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) locally.
Eligible private Florida colleges and universities	Approved independent, nonprofit Florida institutions (most Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida, ICUF, members), at the fixed per-credit-hour rate above instead of a percentage of tuition.

Bright Futures only pays at Florida institutions. It does not transfer to an out-of-state college. Check the official eligible institution list before assuming a specific school qualifies.

Keeping FAS or FMS once you're in college

Bright Futures isn't a one-time award; it renews each year a student stays eligible. The college GPA needed to keep it is lower than the high school GPA needed to earn it, and it's a straightforward unweighted number:

FAS renewal	Minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0 (unrounded, unweighted), plus earning the required credit hours each term.
FMS renewal	Minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.75 (unrounded, unweighted), plus earning the required credit hours each term.

A student must also stay enrolled as a degree- or certificate-seeking student in at least 6 non-remedial credit hours, and remain a Florida resident and U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.

Gold Seal CAPE Scholars (GSC)

GSC is a completely different path from FAS/FMS: it's earned through industry certifications, not GPA or a college entrance exam. It's a strong fit for a student finishing a CTE Academy course sequence with real certifications in hand. See Course List & Progression for Mandarin's CTE Academies.

GPA requirement	None for initial eligibility.
Coursework	At least 5 postsecondary credit hours earned through CAPE (Career and Professional Education) industry certifications that articulate for college credit.
Test score	None required.
Hours	30 volunteer service hours, 100 paid work hours, or a combination totaling 100. Students entering 9th grade in 2024-25 or later need 75 volunteer-only hours instead of 30.
What it pays	Roughly $48 per credit hour toward an Associate in Science, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Applied Science program, or roughly $39 per credit hour toward a certificate or Applied Technology Diploma program. Confirm the exact current rate, since this figure updates yearly.
Where it can be used	Until an eligible associate degree is earned, only at institutions offering an applied technology diploma, technical degree program, or career certificate program. After that, up to 60 additional credit hours can go toward a bachelor's degree.
Renewal	Minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.75 (unrounded, unweighted), plus earning the required credit hours each term.

Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSV)

GSV rewards students who combine solid grades with a real Career and Technical Education (CTE) track record, a natural fit for Mandarin's CTE Academies (Medical, Culinary, and Business). See Course List & Progression for those programs.

GPA requirement	3.00 weighted GPA in non-elective courses, and a separate 3.5 unweighted GPA specifically within CTE courses.
Coursework	At least 3 full credits in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses.
Test score	A minimum ACT or SAT score, or a qualifying score on the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.), an alternative to the ACT/SAT some Florida CTE-track students use instead.
Hours	30 volunteer service hours, 100 paid work hours, or a combination totaling 100. Students entering 9th grade in 2024-25 or later need 75 volunteer-only hours instead of 30.
What it pays	Roughly $48 per credit hour toward an Associate in Science program, or roughly $39 per credit hour toward a certificate or Applied Technology Diploma program. Confirm the exact current rate, since this figure updates yearly.

GSC and GSV share the same volunteer/work hour structure, but GSV is grade- and coursework-based while GSC is certification-based. A student could potentially qualify for both, or for GSV alongside FAS/FMS.

Do not miss the deadline. You must submit the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) to be considered. The deadline is August 31 after high school graduation (January 31 for mid-year graduates). Complete it as soon as you have applied to college.

Stay on track: Take the SAT, ACT, or CLT early enough to retest if needed, keep your college-prep courses in line, and check your Bright Futures GPA with your counselor each year.

Bright Futures GPA is not the same as your school GPA. It only counts 16 specific courses and weights Honors/AP/AICE/Dual Enrollment differently than DCPS does. See Weighted GPA & Class Rank for exactly how the numbers differ.
